R’ Yochanan said in the name of Rebi Shimon ben Yehotzedek: There are eighteen days that one recites a full Hallel : Eight days of the Festival of Sukkos, eight days of Chanukah, the first day of Pesach, Yom Tov of Atzeret (Shavuous), and in the Diaspora, twenty days: nine days of the Festival Of Sukkos, two yom tov days of Pesach and two days of Shavuous. – Talmud Arachin

1. Our prophets established the recitation of the Hallel prayer, which literally means praises, to be recited during the morning prayers of Festivals, and times of National redemption. Hallel’s six Pslams (113-118) area recited together at these joyous times to show thanksgiving, praise, and faith in G-d.
2. Hallel was recited by Moshe and Israel, by Joshua, and Debrah and Barak, when they were saved from their enemies. These Pslams were incorporated into the Book of Pslams by King David.
3. Hallel reflects five basic elements of Jewish faith: The Exodus from Egypt, the Splitting of the Red Sea, Giving of the Torah at Sinai, the Resurrection of The Dead, and the Coming of the Moshiach.
4. Hallel is not recited on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur or Purim. On Rosh Chodesh and the Chol Hamoed days of Pesach, we omit the first two halves of Psalms 115, and 116.
5. A basic commentary on Hallels is provided in the Artscroll Siddur.

The Lies Malik Ali Told us

They are too numerous to count. Practically every word from his mouth about the Lebanon war, Israel, Judaism, Islam is so riddled with errors that it resembles the fiction of a crazy man.

As we begin to dissect his vitriolic bile, I came across this report on missiles used against Israeli tanks.  Yesterday, Ali told the audience of adulating Muslim fanatic students and pro-Israel activists that Hezbollah used 1980’s technology rockets, literally rockets from the 1980’s against Israeli tanks.  Proof of Hezbollah’s claim to be a Party of God, and the underdog.

Well it turns out that this is another big fat hairy lie.

Soon after the war with Hizballah, a high-level Israeli delegation went to Moscow to discuss the arms issue, complaining that Iran and Syria passed Russian-made Fagot and Kornet anti-tank missiles on to Hizballah. When Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Israel on September 7, he said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was particularly angered by the Russian weaponry found in south Lebanon because it contravened promises he had given Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. (Jerusalem Post)

Well as Joseph Goebbels, head of Nazi propaganda said: If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.

Eat in a sukkah

Sukkos is coming, sukkos is coming!  Briefly, we try to eat every serious meal over the Holiday in a Sukkah for seven days, starting on this Friday night. Why? Well, without getting into the details, its all about God, divine shelter, the desert, kabbalah, and nature.  If you have never tried to eat every meal in the sukkah, don’t try it all at once, take each day at a time. We don’t want any accidents.

Sukkos is an outdoor lovers holy day, and you can try to eat ONLY in the sukkah if you want.

If you are Jewish student looking for a place to EAT meals in a sukkah and with home-cooked food, please get in touch with us.  We have families in Irvine, Long Beach, and Los Angeles that would love to host students for a meal or many.
Just send us an email and we will forward the information on.

Al Chayt…We lost in the 12th inning

tigersSaddly Detroit was not able to pull out winning the Central  division today.  They have lost the last five games going into the post-season.  Kansas City, one of the worst teams in baseball, managed to clobber the Tigers. Three times.

Well, hopefuly the Tigers (and their fans) will  do teshuva, and be back for Tuesday’s game in New York witha clean slate.
Wishing everyone an easy fast, an inspiring Yom Kippur, and a healthy and joyous year!
