National Geographic’s Whitewashing of Hamas and the Gaza Tunnels

gaza-tunnel-worker-615-450x300One usually turns to National Geographic to look at the world and marvel at the planet. It covers issues critical to human and animal survival. I love National Geographic and so do my kids.

So imagine my surprise when the Gaza Tunnels article popped up. This lengthy article on the Gaza strip is a whitewashing of a vicious terror group and their means of attaining weapons. The author is James Verini who last year in ForeignPolicy.com wrote on the de facto existence of a Palestinian State, forgot to mention that it was Palestinians who rejected the 1947 UN Partition Plan. He also jumped on the anti-Israel bandwagon “Indeed, no country has been censured as many times by the Security Council (none come close).”

So from the start one would expect that Verini, who might have the best of intentions, has a particularly biased position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But the article fails on so many accounts. The most egregious places include willful and misleading information.

The fact that weapons, including bombs, guns, and missile parts are smuggled through these tunnels is completely ignored. Israel is the constant bogey man accused of every problem, and Hamas, a dictatorship that terrorizes its own citizens, looks relatively benign. The fact that Israel trucks in hundreds of tons of aid daily is completely ignored. Read more

What # Should the @IDFSpokesperson use?

An article in the Washington Post today points out that the pro-Hamas, Pro-Gaza #gazaunderattack has 150x’s more occurrences on Twitter that #pillarofdefence. And that makes sense because #pillarofdefence is a stupid #.

As the terms “Gaza” and “Hamas” trended globally, Twitter users staked out hashtags for their respective causes. On the Israeli side: #PillarofDefense, the name of the latest military operation, which appears to have been started by the IDF account. For the Palestinians, if not necessarily for Hamas: #GazaUnderAttack, #Gazzeateşaltında (Turkish for the same) and several other foreign-language derivatives. As of 5 p.m., the IDF’s tag had received 808 mentions, while the #GazaUnderAttack derivations had around 120,000.

Israel is trying valiantly to stay ahead of the social media curve and use Twitter to live stream the events as they unfold in Southern Israel. Why can’t they pick a # that works? #pillarofdefence might be a basketball term.

I applaud the efforts of the @IDFSpokesperson to get on Twitter and be the voice of Israel and the events as they unfold. I just wish they were as clever with #’s as they are at finding terror masterminds and blowing them up.

Hate Crime At The Ghetto Wall

Poland continues to be a place where Jews works out deep psychological problems in deplorable ways.

Last week an Israeli vandalized the last major section of the Warsaw Ghetto wall. JPost reports:

Former Israeli Air Force captain and Israel boycott activist Yonatan Shapira spray-painted pro-Palestinian graffiti on the walls of the Warsaw Ghetto last week, Channel 10 reported on Sunday.

Shapira was shown on camera the previous Sunday spraying the slogans “Free all ghettos” and “Free Palestine and Gaza” on the walls of the Jewish ghetto in the Polish city – famed site of Jewish resistance to the Nazis – and then hoisting upon the wall a Palestinian flag on a rope with a bottle attached at the end that he threw over the other side.

Shapira’s vandalism occurred on the eve of some of the highlights for Polish Jews this summer. This past week the Jewish community in Poland, together with tens of thousands of non-Jews celebrated Jewish culture at the Krakow Jewish Cultural Festival. MATISYAHU performed at Poland’s premier OPEN’ER Festival in Gdansk. Poles and Jews are finding more ways towards rapprochement, a move forward with good relations.

Shapira’s vandalism shows his disregard for the inherent dignity of his fellow Jews. By desecrating and violating the Jewish community of Poland’s holy site, a place where tears soak the earth, he has committed a hate crime.

The wall is one of the few places that the Jewish community in Warsaw can mourn the loss of millions of Jews. The ghetto walls were destroyed along with most of Warsaw in WWII. The communists that rebuilt the city attempted to erase any other remnant of the infamous wall.

The ghetto wall section that he desecrated is not just visited by local Jews, but by tens of thousands of visitors to Warsaw every year. The Ghetto is where tens of thousands of Jews died before being shipped to the death camps.

Shapira is not a righteous zealot, but a criminal who deserves to serve time for his hateful acts.

Senseless loss of civilian life after English raids on Germany in retaliation for V-1 attacks

bombed germanyThis piece below from the Huffington Post nicely frames the current conflict. NO amount of flexing of muscles by Jews is ever allowed.

Dateline: January 3rd 1944

Fury continues to mount worldwide about the senseless loss of civilian life in Germany caused by England’s callous bombing of German cities including Berlin, Hamburg and Dresden.

As of today many innocent German women and children have died in these utterly brutal bombing missions. And now there are ground offensives starting on mainland Europe.

The English have claimed that they are merely retaliating against the V-1 flying bombs being launched indiscriminately by Nazis at their civilian population in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Coventry and other cities.

It takes huge, uhm, chutzpah, to stand up to the the UN and its chorus of Arab and Muslim ambassadors shouting genocide at the new war. And while some might argue that this campaign wins Israel nothing but more sympathy for Hamas – others have reached a different conclusion. As did England in WWII.
