UC Intifada Targets Ambassador Oren

As we coined the phrase here in 2006 – UC Irvine is home to a strong Hamas/Hizbollah presence, that the University refuses to remove from campus. While Jewish life is making a comeback here – the road is filled with anti-Semitism and racism from Muslim students.

Today – they would not let Michael Oren speak. From Haaretz.

California police reportedly made 12 arrests on Monday after a speech by Israel’s U.S. Ambassador Michael Oren descended into chaos.

Hecklers interrupted Oren’s lecture at Irving University in Los Angeles over 10 times, shouting “killers” and “how many Palestinians did you kill?”

Oren took a 20 minute break after the fourth protest, only to be interrupted again by young men yelling at him every few minutes, loc

al press reported.

Many members of the audience also applauded Oren.

It was not clear whether those arrested were students, or members of the university’s Muslim Student Union, which had publicly condemned Oren’s visit earlier in the day….

Oren eventually completed his speech, some time later than scheduled, but did not take questions from the audience as planned.

University Chancellor Michael Drake was booed by some and applauded by others when told the audience that he was embarrassed by the outburst.

Festival Torah Project

festival_torah_project_webJConnect and Jewlicious run programs throughout the year that require a Sefer Torah.

In the past, we have had to beg, borrow, and pray, that we could find a Torah for these events. In fact last time, we were only able to borrow a Torah from an individual Torah Collector.

This is not because people are not generous — it is that very few Temples or Synagogues want their Torah to be used on it the wilderness, in a tent, amid tens of thousands of festival goers.

So we decided we would write a Torah sepcifically that can be used all over the country, and right here in LA. We will create a travelling Aaron/Ark that will be waterproof. We are commissioning several Torah Mantles – one that will be waterproof and made from the toughest materials.

There is a mitzvah that everyone should write a Sefer Torah in their lifetime. It is the last Mitzvah in the Torah.

By writting one word, one paragraph, one parsha – you are helping to fulfill a mitzvah and being part of a very important campaign.

This brand new Sefer Torah will be used at Shabbat Tent, Jewlicious Festivals, Camp Jewlicious, JConnectLA High Holiday programs, and retreats!

We hope to finish this by May 18th, the Jewish Festival of Shavuot!

Eggs & Bacon (Lamb Bacon that is)

lamb bacon I have enjoyed now for the second time in a week the most delicious breakfast: Eggs and Bacon.

Now hold a second, Rabbi, bacon is trief! Or so I thought.

Jewlicious Festival veteran, and supervisor of culinary arts at the Festival’s VIP wine tasting, Chaim Davids, delivered to me as a house warming gift a package of his home-made Lamb Bacon. LAMB BACON!

Davids is the chef behind The Kitchen Table in Mountain View, CA:

The Kitchen Table serves California Artisinal cuisine with a twist: We are the only certified glatt Kosher restaurant in northern California. We dairy-free and peanut-free, and use only the freshest ingredients. All breads are baked on premises, and the pastrami and corned beef are cured and smoked in-house.

I have not made the pilgrimage to TKT, but those who have – including many of the guests I met at Herzog Wine Cellar’s Tierra Sur Resturant for the Lorne Mackillop & Tomintoul Whisky Dinner last week – rave in superlatives about TKT.

I came across a quote by Anthony Bourdain: “If you want to make people happy, give them bacon.” I get it now. The umami alone is enough to beg for more.

Thank you Chaim Davids, thank you TKT, thank you Rachel. Good Shabbos.
